Deadbolt installation in Vancouver.
What the work involves
Know what you are looking at.
A deadbolt is only as good as what it throws into. The bolt should extend fully - a full-throw residential deadbolt projects about an inch - into a strike anchored through the jamb and into the framing behind it, not just into the thin jamb trim. A deadbolt fitted into soft trim with short screws looks identical to a properly anchored one and behaves completely differently under force.
- Whether the door is thick enough and correctly bored
- Whether the frame can take a properly anchored strike
- Single-cylinder versus double-cylinder, and the egress consequences
- Whether the bolt throws fully without lifting or pulling the door
- What the entry is built from, given Vancouver’s mix of newer and older stock
- Seasonal movement and exposure on a Vancouver exterior door

In Vancouver
What is different here.
The housing mix runs from West End and downtown strata towers to character houses on the east side that commonly carry a basement suite and sometimes a laneway house - three separate entries on one lot. The frame matters as much as the door in Vancouver: an older jamb that has taken decades of weather may need reinforcing before a new deadbolt is worth fitting.
Wet winters and long shoulder seasons move wooden doors on older character houses, and an entry that only latches when you lift the door is usually an alignment problem rather than a lock problem. A bolt aligned perfectly in summer can bind in a wet January, which is why the throw is checked with the door closed normally rather than held in position.

Deadbolt installation questions.
The two that come up most for this service in Vancouver.
Should I choose a double-cylinder deadbolt?
Think carefully. A double-cylinder needs a key from inside, which means nobody can leave through that door without one - a serious concern in a fire. They have narrow uses, usually a glazed door, and should be a deliberate decision rather than a default.
My deadbolt only throws if I lift the door. Is that a problem?
Yes. It means the bolt is not aligned with its strike and is being forced. Beyond wearing the bolt and strike, it means the deadbolt is not fully engaged, so it is not doing the job it was fitted for.
