Door security assessment in Vancouver.
What the work involves
Know what you are looking at.
An assessment looks at the opening as a system rather than at the lock alone: the cylinder, the latch, the deadbolt throw, the strike, the frame, the hinges and the closer where one is fitted. Most doors that feel unreliable are not failing at the lock. A deadbolt that only throws when the door is lifted is telling you the hinges or the frame have moved, and replacing the lock would leave the actual fault untouched.
- Whether the fault is in the lock, the alignment, or the frame
- How old the hardware is and whether parts are still available for it
- Whether the same problem has been repaired before
- Whether key control - who holds working keys - is part of the concern
- Seasonal movement and exposure on a Vancouver exterior door
- What the entry is built from, given Vancouver’s mix of newer and older stock

In Vancouver
What is different here.
Wet winters and long shoulder seasons move wooden doors on older character houses, and an entry that only latches when you lift the door is usually an alignment problem rather than a lock problem. That is the single most common thing an assessment finds here: hardware blamed for a fault that actually sits in a door which has moved with the seasons.
The housing mix runs from West End and downtown strata towers to character houses on the east side that commonly carry a basement suite and sometimes a laneway house - three separate entries on one lot. How old the entry is, and what it is built from, largely decides whether an assessment ends in an adjustment or a replacement.
Before you call
Security assessment questions.
The two that come up most for this service in Vancouver.
Why does my Vancouver door only lock when I pull it hard?
That is usually alignment, not the lock. When a door or frame moves, the deadbolt no longer lines up with its strike and the bolt binds. Forcing it wears the bolt and the strike plate, so it tends to get worse rather than settle.
Will an assessment mean replacing everything?
No. The point is to separate what has actually failed from what is merely old. Adjusting a strike, replacing a worn cylinder, or repairing a closer is frequently enough, and knowing that prevents spending on hardware that was never the problem.
